Con-Way Trucking Terminal

Gwinnett County, Georgia

con-way.jpgCon-Way Transportation Services selected a site in Gwinnett County, Georgia for a new trucking terminal. The approximate 55-acre site was developed with approximately 40 acres for the trucking terminal, and a contingent 15-acre out parcel graded for future development. An office building, terminal dock building, maintenance/truck wash building, and a fuel canopy structure were constructed with buildings totaling 81,000 square feet. Asphalt and concrete pavements were constructed for the remaining portions of the site. Construction involved approximately 7,700 cubic yards of concrete, 40,500 tons of base course, and 15,000 tons of asphalt.

QORE began work during the initial stage of site grading. Our firm was retained due to our vast experience with large mass grading projects. This project involved about 250,000 cubic yards of cut and fill. In addition to a compressed construction schedule, shallow groundwater within the cut areas of the site and soft soils within the low-lying areas of the site posed significant risks of not meeting the planned opening date for the terminal.

QORE provided recommendations concerning staging of the grading operations, installation of dewatering trenches, the use of hydrated lime to facilitate the drying of wet soils, and stabilization of soil subgrades within pavement areas.

QORE’s involvement with the project helped the opening deadline be met. In addition cost saving options were identified and explored during grading and pavement subgrade preparation activities.
